The KUBWA camp invasion was nothing short of a broad day robbery and unnecessary and irresponsible incursion into the NYSC operations in the FCT. The criminals and miscreants that came in their thousands were armed with daggers, machetes, axes, and iron cutters, harmers. Etc. They did not only overpower the camp security personnel but were able to hit their targets with unimaginable successes. The FCT Coordinator, Management and staff were not only dumbfounded at the colossal damage unleashed on the camp facilities, but were quite amazed at the mode of operations, a seeming commando of sort by an intelligence officer loaded with corresponding maps, timings, desired personnel and artilleries.
The hoodlums displayed questionable and suspicious designs that saw them hitting rightly at all the critical structures and facilities of the KUBWA camp and carted away properties worth hundreds of millions of naira, though the actual, is yet to be determined as the report of the probe committee is pending.
The development threw the camp community in a state of helplessness. Yet, a detachment of the Nigeria Police Force who stormed the camp two hours into the invasion offered little or no resistance. It was the arrival of a crack team from the Nigerian Army that complimented the police efforts to restore sanity.
Besides, the usual stockpiles prior to orientations, the scheme had gone extra miles to acquire sophisticated and sensitive equipment and materials to ensure the safety of Corps members and officials within the parameters and designs of the NCDC safety protocols and had secured approval to restart camp activities. Thus, the hoodlums were quite at the peak of these arrangements hence, the wanton and enormous looting. However, the combined interventions of the security agencies led to the arrest of over two hundred looters, while the search for the miscreants continues.
The monumental losses left the entire NYSC family dumbfounded yet highly spirited towards continuity. In a nutshell, the orientation Broadcasting Service, OBS, the camp Clinic, Kitchen that were fully loaded with sophisticated equipment as well as the Hostels, Official Residence of the FCT Coordinator on camp and the Kits warehouse were all looted to dust while, the Secretariat is left on the altar of faith and hope, for a show of solidarity and supports to be able to host the forthcoming orientation programme scheduled to takeoff nationwide on the 10th of November, 2020.
However, Hajiya Walida Isa who described the incident as demoralizing and unthinkable is fast getting back her groove, as she continues to host dignitaries, prominent amongst them are; the DG, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Dr. Olusade Adesola, Ag. Secretary/Chairman, NYSC FCT Governing Board, Dr. Kelvin Ike, as well as representatives of Corporate organizations on solidarity visits, even as hundreds of well-wishers’ calls and messages continue to hit her phone.
